Very little information has been found to date (2013) about this newspaper. A comment announcing that The Northern Age is to be published appears in Queensland Figaro and Punch in May 1888. The comment reads: 'Townsville is shortly to have a new morning paper, to be called the Northern Age. It is to be called a "Liberal" paper, whereas its promoters are merely Stagnants—Griffithites—followers of the Bankrupt Party.'
The newspaper is also mentioned in Rod Kirkpatrick’s Sworn To No Master: A History of the Provincial Press in Queensland to 1930. (Toowoomba, 1984). No Australian libraries record holdings for this newspaper on Trove.

The Northern Age and North Queensland Telegraph began publication on 10 June 1889 after the merger of The Northern Age and The North Queensland Telegraph and Territorial Separationist. When the proprietors, The North Age and Telegraph Newspapers Company Ltd, went into liquidation in 1892, publisher Alfred Henry converted The Northern Age to a weekly paper and moved it to Ingham and then Halifax under the names of The Ingham Planter and The Northern Planter.

— Appears in: The Cairns Post , 5 December 1888; (p. 2)- 'The three liberal papers of Townsville, the Northern Age, North Queensland Telegraph and North Queensland Sentinel, have been floated into a limited liability company, with a capital of £10,000.'
- A protest from the northern newspapers at an order from the Postmaster-General stating that the English mails are not to be advertised as the Department considers the newspapers should publish this information without being paid for it. The writer suggests the Postmaster-General should accept an equivalent cut in his own salary and calls for the governance from Brisbane to be cut.
