Notes

  • Dedication: To Gladys.
  • Author's note: 'The Plaque on the Tree' is dedicated to Gladys Townsend, sister of Harry Jenkins who was killed at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. In memory of Harry his parents planted a blue gum tree in front of old Gibsons Soak Inn. My earliest recollections of Harry were when I first saw him at the old thirty mile condenser. His father was in charge of various places where water was supplied to the teamsters, Gibsons Soak, the Thirty Mile and Swan Lagoon. Harry was one of the flowers of Australian manhood who gave his life in the Great War 1914-1918. The plaque bears his name and the date of his death.
