Contemporary reviews indicates that the novel blended 'The Old World aristocracy [...] with backblock struggles' ('In Search of Copy', Central Queensland Herald, 21 July 1932, p.45). Other reviews note that the novel was set in 1890s and the action moved between the Darling Downs, Brisbane, and Ireland, including the 1893 Brisbane floods ('Books of the Week', Brisbane Courier, 31 March 1928, p.23).
