Saga and romance of titled English families. Lord Odo Charleton, long-vanished heir to the estate of the Earl of Charlewick, reappears at his father's deathbed to to claim the inheritance all had presumed would go to his dead brother's son, Lord Ronald Charleton. Odo schemes to attract Ronald's finacee, Hellene Clair, by paying her unscrupulous father's debts. Meanwhile Edda Brend is forced to leave her poor guardian's house in Yorkshire and embarks on a journey to discover her mysterious origins which lead her eventually to the estate of the Earl of Chadwick.
