A romance of titled England. Wilchester Towers in Kent, home of Sir Archibald Wilchester, his spirited daughter Rosamond, and his son and heir Mark - presently in India serving in the army, is threatened by the baliff Amos Hodd. Stealing from his master over the years he has rendered Sir Archibald so indebted that he is about to foreclose on the estate - and delays 3 months only that Rosamond may be courted by his son Jason for Hodd desires the noble connection. The Wilchester's only hope is to find the Indian treasure buried years before in the Gray Tower - and they enlist the aid of their faithful old family servant, Bettine ... Meanwhile Hugh Chandos, raised as a gentleman but unaware of his parentage, comes to the neighbourhood in search of his father. He saves Rosamond from Jason's advances and affection springs up between them. And Mark Wilchester returns secretly from India to help prove the bailiff's fraud ... (PB)
