In the story that gives the collection its title, the author describes his passage from one hemisphere to another aboard a derelict ship that brings him to Australia along with 1300 other immigrants. The other stories are a mixture of childhood reminiscences from war-torn Hungary, stories about his colourful relatives and humorous accounts of life in a new country.
