Xavier Herbert discusses many aspects of his life including his ardent anti-imperialism. Deals with his childhood struggles, his younger years as a medical student, his sexual awakening and experiences with alcohol and his opinions on abortion. Herbert also discusses his literary achievements and his various difficulties in writing his opus Poor Fellow My Country (1975).
