Looks at some of the assumptions that lie behind various attempts to construct national literary traditions from the first made by G. B. Barton in Literature in New South Wales to Leonie Kramer's Oxford History of Australian Literature. Analyses some of the recurrent myths, models and metaphors that historians and literary scholars have used to construct an Australian national tradition.
