Stella Lees and Pam McIntyre's The Oxford Companion to Australian Children's Literature (1993): 417 comments: '...Cockroach is Benjy's pet. He writes beautiful music, but his career is cut short by a zealous cleaning lady, although his music is preserved through the efforts of the conductor, Sir Peregrine Ample.'
