Notes

  • In a letter dated 12 September 1976 Graham Pitt writes that several poems were withdrawn from this collection because they used 'unseemly words'. The words were all sexual in nature, referring to genitalia, sexual orientation and sexual behaviour. Pitt believed the sensitivity to these words related to proprieties expected of a teacher during mid-1970's. The original letter (which also includes comments on Pitt's changing writing style) is held with the National Library of Australia's copy of The Science of Being Discontented.
  • Epigraph: A sound poetic training is nothing more than the science of being discontented -- Ezra Pound, Make It New.
  • Dedication: To Ken Albion, Mal Andersen, Jim McLary [and] Merv Muhling with thanks - G.P.
