  • Author's note: This is not an autobiography. Even if I thought my life had been of sufficient interest to others to justify such a personal history, I am by nature too reserved to write it. The reader will find in these memoirs little or nothing about my private life. Instead I have concentrated on my experience as a journalist on four of the greatest newspapers in the world, in Britain and Australia,... (p.ix).
