      • Author's note: 'Author's Apology. In addition to the errors of style and taste, which the writer can only pray may not be discovered, there are some technical errors in this book, due to a less aesthetic carelessness, that must be confessed at once. The writer apologises and asks the reader to substitute 'spirit's' for 'spirits' in the seventh line from the bottom of page 7, and 'hoarded' for 'horded' in the second last line of page 9. On page 18 there is no less than a transposition of titles. On page 26, line 22, for 'lead', read 'leads'.
