Selected from "ten books and more than three thousand items of poetry and prose printed in The Herald. ...The script ... is made up from the poems and prose of C. J. Dennis, ...the narration is compiled from comments made in letters ...[and] reported comments and views...the script is presented as it was performed, with the addition of two ...short stories". Sections in italics are original stage directions or additional background comments by John Derum. Included in the published script are three Appendices. Fighting the Fires, published in The Herald, 25 February 1926 (from which an extract was included in the performances following the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983) and some material originally included in performance but subsequently cut, are published in Appendices 1 and 3. The poem Limpy Ben, with extracts from correspondence between C. J. Dennis and George Robertson discussing the original decision not to publish it, is published for the first time in Appendix 2.-- Introduction.
