Author's note: The whole of the contents contained in the twenty chapters of 'The Miserable Clerk' were first published in the Brisbane Courier... S. R. Brisbane, May 1925.
Richard Fotheringham's bibliography lists three additional 'Sheriff's Office' stories (see Courier 30/8; 25/10; 1/11) which do not appear in the novel. However, my search of the Courier did not locate the original printing of the two stories which comprise Chapters 10 and 15; the Courier issues containing these stories have not as yet been traced.
In Search of Steele Rudd (pp. 70-75) discusses this work at length. Richard Fotheringham describes this work as a novella, 'which was based on' Rudd's 'life in the Sheriff's Office' between 1889 and 1903' (p.70). He also notes that in 1935, Rudd wrote a screenplay based on The Miserable Clerk. (p.165)
