Notes

  • Dedication: for Di, David, Ben, Adam, Jez and Liam and in memory of my mother Mina Florence Morgan (1910-1994): she didn't teach me flowers she taught the heart.
  • Epigraph: I'll leave you nebbich poems like these / Made to be read by five or six readers. / Then we'll go off, each intent on his own cares, / Since, as I was saying, it has grown late. - Primo Levi.

— Review of Out of the Fast Lane Mal Morgan , 1998 selected work poetry
Mal Morgan's fifth book of poems is in the fullest sense refreshing. He makes the world attractive in spite of the pain he's familiar with, and which friends and fellow beings suffer everywhere. Morgan has experience more than most: these poems chart the heartache and loss of fore-bears, lovers, children, and those encountered in his career as suburban and hospital pharmacist. The drugs we use, including poetry, to make the going smoother: he knows these, as Jacques Prevert, an admired model, knew the 'charm' in the lovely speech that softens blows and lets the mind out 'on parole' (Introduction)
