      Note/s:
      • Author's note. Stories of an outcast and his kettle of gold still survive in the country of Ravensbourne forest, Queensland. To all the tellers of these stories, yesterday and today, I am indebted. But the country of this novel is another one. It is also other than the Darling Downs countryside that contains a centre called Formartin whose name I have borrowed because I like it. And I hope that no working journalist or editor I have known will imagine he could be fitted into the shoes of any character here. To the company of men among whom I earn my living, I offer tribute.
