Author's note: ...The play Bali Adat celebrates this event-the suicide of a Balinese ruler and his court, or puputan (literally, 'finish: ritual sacrifice of the ruling court of a kingdom'). There were four major puputans. This play centres on the puputan of the Raja of Badung and his court. The shame inflicted on the Dutch administration by this puputan profoundly affected Dutch thinking and the colonial administration. ...Graham Sheil, Melbourne 1991.
