BiographyHistory

Born in Tiverton, Devonshire, William Brooks trained as a compositor, and spent a period in South Africa before migrating to Australia in 1882. Brooks worked for the Sydney Morning Herald, and for the Sydney printer Edwards Lee and Co, before setting up his own printing business, William Brooks and Co., in George Street, Sydney, around 1890. His firm became known as a major educational publisher in NSW and Queensland.

Brooks was opposed to trade unions, and was active in a number of employers' associations. He was appointed to the NSW Legislative Council in 1917. William Brooks died in October 1937.
