BiographyHistory

One of the fourteen children of the noted London bookseller Thomas Tegg and his wife Mary, Samuel Augustus Tegg accompanied his brother James to New South Wales in 1834. According to the ADB, S. A. Tegg then returned to London, before making the long voyage back to the colonies, arriving in Hobart in December 1836. Shortly afterwards he married a local woman, Caroline Lewis, and set up a bookselling business and circulating library in Elizabeth Street, Hobart. Tegg sold out in October 1847, stopping in Sydney to help sort out his brother's estate, before returning to England. On 11 June 1866, Tegg remarried in London, and in 1871 he was recorded living, as a 'retired bookseller', with his wife Jemima and three young children, in Paignton, Devonshire. He died there the following year.
