Paul Sharrad has an MA in Spanish Literature and a PhD in Postcolonial Literatures from Flinders University. He taught at Flinders University (tutor, 1984-1985) and the National University of Singapore (1985-1986), has been a visiting Fellow at the universities of Hawaii and Bourgogne, and has made several visits to Indian universities. He has taught at Wollongong University since (1987) and was made Associate Professor in (1999).

Sharrad was a founding editor (1979-1985) of the CRNLE Reviews Journal, and editor of New Literatures Review 1987-2004. He has written extensively about Postcolonial literatures and has a particular interest in Indian and Pacific writing. He has been part of an ARC-funded Discovery team looking at the links between text and textile crafts in the colonial experience.
