BiographyHistory

American publishing house Lee & Shepard was established by William Lee and Charles Shepard. The firm started by publishing photograph albums and quickly established themselves as a leading publisher of children's books, publishing the first American edition of Alice in Wonderland, 1869. Shepard died in 1889. Lee sold the subsidiary Geo. M. Baker & Co. to George's brother, Walter. Lee retired in 1898. In 1904 the company purchased Lothrop Publishing Co. and renamed the firm Lothrop, Lee & Shepard.
