BiographyHistory

Mann was educated at the Fort Street School and Sydney University and served for three years with the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. During his war service he wrote his first radio play 'The Seas Between' which won the Lux Radio Theatre Contest of 1946. Mann won two writing awards in the Actors' Playhouse series during the early years following the war.

After becoming a freelance writer in 1946, he wrote mainly radio plays and scripts. He went to England in 1954, and spent seven years in London, where several of his plays were produced on the stage and on television. It was here that he made his name.

On his return to Sydney in 1961 he took up a position as Television Drama Editor with the Australian Broadcasting Commission.

  • The unpublished comedy stage play, Sky High, enjoyed success around England and was subsequently produced at the Elizabethan Theatre, Hobart with Max Oldaker in the lead role.
