'Sylvia Beach operated the famous Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris in the 1920's and 1930's and was the first person to publish James Joyce's Ulysses in book form. Her shop was the center of activity for American expatriate writers and members of Parisian literary circles, serving as a meeting place for such luminaries as Andre Gide, Paul Valery, Simone de Beauvoir, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein. The shop also functioned as a lending library, and Beach established many enduring friendships with her patrons, including her forty-year relationship with Ernest Hemingway.'
