Helene Chung was married to John Martin (q.v.) and is an Australian Chinese, fourth generation Tasmanian who attended St Mary's Catholic School for girls in Hobart. Upon completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Tasmania, Chung began an MA in history. Chung has also been an adjunct research fellow at Monash University in Melbourne.

'In 1974, she became the first non-white reporter on Australian television. A former Australian Broadcasting Corporation [ABC] Beijing correspondent, she was also the first female posted abroad by the ABC.' Chung has worked as a free journalist in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, London and Cairo. 'In 1971 she made headlines with the first radio interview granted by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Anne.'
