Founded in 1949 as the publishing house of the University of London, the Athlone Press was initially subsidised by the university to publish works by scholars associated with it. After funding was withdrawn in 1979 the Press was sold to the Bemrose Corporation, and two years later became an independent publishing house. Since that time the Athlone Press has continued as an academic publisher, but has expanded into a broad range of specialised academic publications.
