Born in Brisbane, Craswell married in 1966. She left Australia in 1971 and travelled through Europe, America and Canada before returning to Brisbane in 1974 where she resided with her two children. She studied French for two years before enrolling at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1981 with first class honours and a university Gold Medal. Craswell went on to complete a PhD in English literature and has been employed as a senior advisor in academic skills at the Australian National University.
