BiographyHistory

Derek Freeman was a New Zealand anthropologist known for his criticism of Margaret Mead's work on Samoan society. He taught at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and the University of Samoa. In 1955, he became Senior Fellow in the Research School of Pacific Studies at Australian National University in Canberra, where he stayed until his death.
