'In the 1980s and ‘90s, Michael Hutchence was flying high and topping the charts as the lead singer of the hugely successful Australian rock band INXS. There was, however, a darkness that always hovered behind the spotlight. Hutchence, a man who saw rock and roll as “liberation,” was a natural performer who channeled his unique brand of exuberant vocals and charismatic sex appeal onto the stage until his untimely death at the age of 37.

'Through a treasure trove of rarely seen archival footage and insights from those closest to Hutchence, director Richard Lowenstein creates a documentary that is both kinetic and intimate, delving into the singer’s complicated upbringing, his rise to fame, the devoted love affairs with women such as Helena Christensen, Kylie Minogue, and Paula Yates, a growing drug problem, the traumatic brain injury that changed the course of his life, and his never-ending struggle to make peace with himself.'

'AUTOLUMINESCENT traces the turbulent life of one of Australia’s most influential and multi-faceted rock-guitarists and songwriters, Rowland S. Howard. Using a combination of contemporary and archival footage, the film weaves a portrait of an enigmatic man via a selection of revealing interviews, performance footage, photographs and music that traverses the vibrant history of the post-punk era. It is a poignant exploration of a man who became a quiet rock’n’roll icon and who formed a truly original, eclectic and visionary body of work.'

1 y separately published work icon Putting Dogs in Space Richard Lowenstein , 2017 11380467 2010 single work criticism 'Richard Lowenstein’s Dogs in Space revels in a particular historical moment: the final, dying spin of the Catherine Wheel that was Melbourne 70s punk culture before its raffish spirit dissipated in the safer, blander decade of the 1980s. To read Richard’s diary notes on the making of the film in 1986, now 30 years on, is to realise however that the bravura of punk was never fully cowed.' (Introduction)
