Set on an isolated asteroid in deep space, the film combines science-fiction and noir mystery. The asteroid is populated by artificially intelligent robots, who mine the asteroid's icy core to produce oxygen and hydrogen, which in turn fuels passing spaceships. When crane operator Faraday goes missing, presumed 'dead', the mysterious Company sends an investigator to investigate the secret lives of the asteroid's robots.

In an isolated valley, four unrelated people, each with their own loneliness and uncertainties, are brought together when a mysterious creature begins killing local livestock.

Based on Tim Winton's novel, this film was low budget but highly regarded by critics.
