The narrator has a friend, Gerard, who learned to sign for their deafness. In return, the narrator keeps Gerard's secret: that he likes killing animals and stuffing them, a self-taught taxidermist. The RSPCA comes knocking, and Gerard and the narrator cannot fend them off. Gerard is led away and the narrator is left with the dead animals.
