BiographyHistory

Gurney Patmore was an English journalist who spent approximately eight years in Australia in the mid-nineteenth century. He initially worked at the Melbourne Argus, which he jointly edited with H. E. Watts (q.v.), in the period 1859-1864.

On leaving the Argus, Patmore then established and edited the Western Times, at Portland. Following his return to England, Patmore worked as a sub-editor at the London Daily News and later became editor of the Derby Mercury. He was the younger brother of the English poet and author Coventry Patmore (q.v.).
