— Appears in: The Goulburn Herald and County of Argyle Advertiser , 23 December vol. 1 no. 26 1848; (p. 4) The poem is an epitaph for John Kennedy Hume killed by the notorious Whitton gang in the Yass area in 1840. At Thomas Whitton's trial the Attorney-General 'put on the file an information charging the prisoner with the wilful murder of John Kennedy Hume, but it was not his intention to prosecute it. He had also several charges of robbery and other outrages against the prisoner'. Source: Sydney Gazette 27 February, 1840 (p.2).
