1 4 The Navigator Patricia Sykes , Liza Lim (composer), 2008 single work musical theatre opera

'"The Navigator begins with the song of cicadas, a high pitch of desire and the rustle of the quivering feathers of an entrapped Angel of History. In Greek and Roman mythology the cicada symbolised resurrection, the onset of war, immortality, spiritual realisation and spiritual ecstasy. Here, it is a perfect prelude to this story about the extremity of passion, about Eros and Thanatos, Desire and Death, the gamble of lovers and of war and choices made.

The Beloved enters a river of transformation. Shadow-twinned with the form of The Navigator, she begins a journey that holds up a strikingly human kind of hope. A Sirenic chorus acts as both provocateur and ally to The Beloved and The Navigator. They journey through anguish and pleasure, chaos and clarity until arriving at the final choice between annihilation and creation.' Source: /www.melbournefestival.com.au/ (Sighted 12/08/2008).
