BiographyHistory

Behan was an Irish writer born in Dublin in 1923. His most famous novel, Borstal Boy, was drawn from the time he spent in the Borstal juvenile detention centre in Britain in the 1940s. Behan was a member of the IRA and was caught (aged 16) with a bag of explosives with the intent to blow up a battleship in Liverpool harbour. Some of his books were subsequently prohibited in Ireland.
