'In the first year of the European War there was killed Henri Gaudier, a young French artist. He had been living in London in the direst poverty, but blessed with the artistic and spiritual companionship of a woman of some Eastern European race, Sophie Brzeska. So dominant was the spirit of this remarkable woman and so complete the spiritual union between them that Gaudier even added her name to his. The facts that have been given to the world have proved so arresting that three books have been written about it and a play has also been founded on it.'
