Notes

  • The editorial for this issue records that the Rhoda arrived at Launceston on [6 March 1838] 'direct from London on the 4th November [1837], the Land's end the 12th [November].' The ship had a copy of the London Times newspaper of 4th November 1837. The Times was 'barren of information of interest to the Colonists. Parliament had not met. Queen Victoria intended to dine with the city authorites at the Guildhall, on the 9th Nov[ember].'

Specimen of a Patent Pocket Dictionary, for the Use of Those Who Wish to Understand the Meaning of Things As Well As Words, extract prose humour

An extract from the first instalment of a serialisation of a humourous dictionary of words published in the English magazine the New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal in 1824.

The word 'Specimen' in the original title is plural. However, as this is an extract (a 'Specimen' of the 'Specimens') the editor of the Cornwall Chronicle may have deliberately made the work singular.
