BiographyHistory

English-born actor, writer, manager, director/producer

Best known for his long association with actress Ella Carrington, Charles H. Taylor likely came to Australia in 1872 and over the next five decades carved out a reputation as one of Australia pre-eminent actor/managers. During his career he appeared in many locally-written productions (including pantomimes and burlesques written by Marcus Clarke and Garnet Walch), toured the Taylor-Carrington dramatic company for many years throughout Australasia and the Orient (the latter tour lasting some seven years), and wrote several original dramas and musical entertainments. Taylor continued acting (often alongside Carrington) up until his death, and at once stage in the mid-1910s appeared at Harry Clay's Bridge Theatre in dramatic productions of Uncle Tom's Cabin (1914), Never Despair and Slaves of London (Both 1915). Between 1916 and 1919 he both acted and worked as business manager/stage manager for the Fullers.

Notes

  • Taylor has been reported as being Australian, but his death notices indicate he that he was born in London.

  • Interestingly, Taylor and Carrington were arrested and charged with the murder of an infant in 1880. The charges were dropped, however, when it was later proven that Carrington had suffered a miscarriage.

  • This Charles H. Taylor should not be confused with English lyricist, Charles Henry Taylor (1859-1907)
