Notes

  • This poem heads an advertisement for Phillip M'Carroll's Sydney butcheries.

M'Carroll's first name is variously spelled 'Philip' and 'Phillip' in advertisements appearing in Sydney newspapers. In Sydney's Sands Directory, the name appears with the double 'l' and this form is used consistently in AustLit, regardless of the spelling in individual advertisements.

  • The poem includes reference to a speech made by Alderman Pritchard of the Municipal Council of Sydney. The speech allegedly cast aspersions on the loyalty of the Irish to the British Crown. (Pritchard disputed this construction of his meaning and denied that he had said 'one word against the Irish or their nationality'. See The Empire, 24 March 1868: 4.)
