In a community so proverbially prosperous and wealthy, there will surely be found persons whom the dictates of humanity and the ordinary sympathies of their nature will induce to assist the indigent and succour the distressed.'

— Review of A Memoir of the Life of Charles Macdonald 1838 single work autobiography ; The Fate of Genius 1838 single work essay 'The little work is well worthy the perusal of all individuals inclined to humanity, for certainly there is not an affliction greater to the human species than that of blindness, which this poor man is cast down, and rendered comparatively useless to society. The main object of the Author is to create a feeling of compassion in the hearts of the inhabitants of his adopted land, in oeder that a sufficient sum may be raised to defray his expenses to England, where he anticipates relief by an operation upon his eyes.'
