Grimesish Grumberlings : Where Have All the Pigs Gone,
single work
essay
In a round-about-way Chandler discusses how words and expressions change, go out of fashion or become extinct over time. The title 'Pig Island' is in reference to the name long ago given to New Zealand. He also looks at the origins of the word 'car,' arguing against his wife's claim that it could not have been used in the 1880s (the time in which his Kelly Country novel is set). He points, however, to a patent document from 1864 in which the word is used in the context of a passenger vehicle (albeit in reference to an airship).
