A topical and musical burlesque founded on the Bellini opera, it was presented as the second production for Harry Leston's season of burlesque under the Dan Tracey management.

During the same week that Dan Tracey produced his burlesque of La Sonnembula there was also a production of the original Bellini opera at the Garrick Theatre (produced by William Hughes), which suggests the possibility that Leston used the Bellini work as his template.

It is unclear if Leston's burlesque bears any relationship to H. J. Byron's La Sonnambula; Or, The Supper, the Sleeper, and the Merry Swiss Boy (1865).

Another burlesque of La Sonnambula is known to have been presented at Frank Smith's Alhambra Theatre (Sydney) from 21 January 1893. There does not appear to be any relationship between the two productions.
