Set during the Algerian War (1954-1962) and the efforts of the OAS (Organisation Armée Secrète) to, through assassinations and terrorism, prevent Algeria's succession from French colonial rule.

The original novel involved an Australian on holiday in Paris; this adaptation transformed the character into an American.
