Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
This work, published for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, is an illustrated tourist guide to the colony of Tasmania, as well as serving as advertising for the shipping company. A second edition was published in 1899, with an added index, but was otherwise identical to the first edition. The guide begins with the history of the Company, detailing the prices of various fares, and providing a history of Tasmania before a section on excursions in Tasmania. Arranged around the population centres of the colony, this section highlighted the situation, population, and societies of the towns, before moving on to describe places of interest around each centre and prices of transport.
