  • Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing

This travel guide was printed for the Union Steam-Ship Company of New Zealand and was intended to work as a useful companion for tourists in Tasmania, as well as providing advertising for the Company. The guide was constructed in a narrative style, assuming the voyage of the potential tourist: “we will suppose... that our visitor has arrived in Hobart either by steamer or by rail.” It directed tourists to Tasmania to sites of interest throughout the colony, and provided specific information about the location of hotels, shops, the state of roads, and costs in the colony. The work gave detailed information about Hobart, Launceston, the East and West Coasts, and many other towns and natural attractions.
