19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Howard Haywood, member of the Geographical Society of Australasia, revised and illustrated Through Tasmania (1885) from an earlier guide. It included everyday places of note and interest that Haywood considers worthy of visiting while in Tasmania. Haywood foregrounded that he had visited every place in his guide, claiming that meant his publication was reliable. Through Tasmania was an entertaining presentation of Tasmania, designed as a reference for both the stranger to the colony and the resident. Heywood later published Colonists' Advertiser and Visitors' Guide to Tasmania (1888), which was a similar text.
