19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Charles Medyett Goodridge survived the shipwreck of the cutter, The Princess of Wales. This emigrant guide to Van Diemen's Land has been attributed to Goodridge (1796-), who also authored Narrative of a Voyage to the South Seas (1832). Goodridge's account was drawn together from a range of sources, including the appendix to the Van Diemen's Almanack for 1831 (by Mr. Ross, editor of the Hobart Town Courier), as well as extracts, newspaper clippings and publications from Hobart Town collected during his four-year residence. The pamphlet briefly described health, geography, climate, housing, expenses, literature, manufacturing, leisure, property, fauna, and flora, and features two maps.
