19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Alfred C. Cruttwell's (1853-?) Sketches of Australia a continuous travel narrative arranged around sub-headings; there are no chapters. Having been employed to survey the geology of New South Wales, Cruttwell's work is a travel narrative, but in a literal sense: it is a description of actual landscapes. Beginning with a bird's eye view of Australia in order to understand the topography of the country, Cruttwell provides a scientific account of New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.
