19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Trant Chambers (1859-1929), author of The Railways of Western Australia and later Western Australia, Its Position and Prospects (1899), published a concise, illustrated emigrant guide to Western Australia. Devised to present information to intending emigrants, A Land of Promise provided a sketch of the financial position of the colony of Western Australia, the railway, postal and telegraph systems, as well as education and industry. A considerable amount of the work was dedicated to agriculture and land settlement.
