— Appears in: Foreign Literature Studies , no. 1 2023; (p. 164 - 176) 'Created the images of two crazy colonists in different backgrounds. In Coetzee's writing, the colonization of South Africa by the Dutch colonists and the invasion of Vietnam by the American Empire have homogeneity and historical continuity. The novel aims to refute the theory of colonial civilization, deconstruct the hegemonic masculinity of the colonists, and challenge the mythological logic of the colonists, thereby subverting the colonial myths constructed and peddled by Western culture for centuries, exposing the false narrative of colonial power discourse, and leading the world Re-examine and reflect on the history of colonialism. Coetzee intervenes in history through creation, resists and rewrites colonial historical discourse with unique text structure and personalized narrative techniques, highlighting the importance of novels in participating in historical narratives. It is of great practical significance to reread "The Darklands" at a time when the remnants of imperialism are still alive.' (Publication abstract) 
 
1 The Implications of Vegetarian Ethics in J.M.Coetzee’s Works Jin Huaimei , 2020 single work criticism
— Appears in: Foreign Literature Studies , no. 2 2020; (p. 110-120) 'The identity of Nobel laureate J. M. Coetzee as a vegetarian is closely tied to his literary writing. Vegetarianism is not only Coetzee’s lifestyle, but also his major creative idea. Coetzee presents his values and ethics of vegetarianism in his work by means of personalized artistic techniques, expressing his ethical beliefs, and playing out his role as an ethical guide. His vegetarian ethics demonstrates both the care for animals and the concern for the victims of gender bias and racism. What he does in his work is to expose the bloody violence and atrocity inflicted on animals in carnivorous culture in defense of their basic and ethical right for survival on the one hand and, on the other hand, debunk the gender-based and political discourse hidden in the carnivore diet in patriarchal culture as a fierce resistance to and relentless denunciation of the gender oppression and racial violence conspired with carnivorism. Coetzee hopes that the vegetarian ethics represented in his work will inspire his readers to reflect on their relationships with animals and with other people, probe into the true nature of human being, and thereby benefit from the ethical instructions and moral admonitions. However, there seems to be some inevitable ethical paradoxes in his moral criticism on carnivore behavior and his vegetarian attitude, which we need to consider in earnest.' (Publication abstract)

— Appears in: Contemporary Foreign Literature , vol. [2019] no. 4 2019; (p. 119-126)  In approaching J. M. Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians, critics have tended to focus on torture and its rich political and ethical connotations, with insufficient attention paid to its environmental concerns. In fact, in the novel, Coetzee not only describes the harsh environment and climate, but also explores the conflicts between human beings and the environment through the imperial army’s strange defeat in the war against its imaginary "barbarian" enemy. Waiting for the Barbarians is therefore an environmental warning for the Anthropocene. One feasible way out of this predicament is the Confucian ecological philosophy, which aims at realizing the harmony between man and nature, emphasizes the solidarity between them, and advocates that human beings, as subjects of virtue, should consciously improve their moral cultivation, respect nature and treat all forms of life with benevolence.
