About 'Teaching with BlackWords'
BlackWords helps teachers to embed Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in their teaching and the classroom.
BlackWords is an important resource for teachers and it can also be used effectively in the classroom. It gives teachers and students access to Indigenous-written and Indigenous-influenced stories in many forms and to up-to-date information on authors and their works.
BlackWords contains records for published and some unpublished books, stories, plays, poems, and secondary works associated with First Nations Australian writers and storytellers and includes works in English, in translations, and in Australian languages.
BlackWords can help teachers embed Indigenous perspectives in their teaching practices; expanding students understanding of Australia's history, and acknowledging the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Australia's First Nations peoples.
BlackWords provides access to curated lists of writing from around Australia and the Torres Strait Islands: resources that can be used flexibly to complement a range of curriculum learning goals. Moreover, these resources ensure that teachers can include authentic, diverse perspectives of First Nations peoples in their teaching, as is recommended by the Australian Curriculum.
Read Dr Jeanine Leane’s article Teaching with BlackWords for guidance on embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture in teaching.
Professor Anita Heiss's BlackWords Essays are also key introductory reading to Indigenous writing and storytelling, while her interviews with leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers provide insights into the motivations and inspirations that help them create.
